Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, October 4: Mathiam Keyser of South Africa carded a magnificent 10-under-par 61 to lead by five shots after the first round of the RM225,000 (approximately US$58,000) PGM UMW Championship.

Keyser was one of the golfers who did not manage to complete their opening rounds on Wednesday due to bad weather. He established his superiority from the start as he sunk seven birdies and made the turn at 29. He made four more birdies and dropped one shot before signing his card on Thursday at the Impian Golf and Country Club.

Malaysia's Sukree Othman gave the local fans plenty to cheer as he carded a 66 to finish in lone second place. Like Keyser, he enjoyed a flawless front nine that was highlighted by six birdies.

Poom Pattaropong of Thailand is in tied-third with Japan's Naoki Sekito.

Poom took advantage of a hot putter to shoot a four-under-par 67. The young Thai seized his opportunities early in the round as he made four birdies in his opening six holes.

“I’ve enjoyed my round today. I hit a lot of good approach shots and created a lot of birdie chances. The greens are rolling great and I’ve putted really well. I’m really happy to score seven birdies today,” said Poom, who has enjoyed a good run of form recently. He posted two top-fives in his last three starts on the Asian Development Tour.

A shot behind in tied-fifth are Thailand's Pisitchai Thippong recent ADT winner, Shakhawat Sohel of Bangladesh.
